Two Australian initiatives shortlisted in IDC's Asia Pacific Smart Cities Awards

Sydney, Australia, 29 May 2018 – IDC Asia Pacific today announced that two Australian initiatives have been shortlisted as finalists in the 2018 IDC Asia Pacific Smart Cities Awards. The annual awards highlight and acknowledge outstanding smart city initiatives in the Asia Pacific region and this year attracted over 180 entries.

For 2018, two projects from Australia have been shortlisted as finalists in two of the 12 award categories. The Smart City Program from the Ipswich City Council is a finalist in the Administration category, while the Water Savings Initiative from the Fairfield City Council is a finalist in the Smart Water category.

Jaideep Thyagarajan, Senior Market Analyst at IDC Australia, "These are extraordinary accomplishments and we have nominated more cutting-edge initiatives this year than previous years."

The Ipswich Smart City program is a testimony for what public private partnerships can achieve. Their initiative goes beyond digital technologies, where they aspire to embrace new ways of working, learning and living as they work towards achieving their mission of being a truly connected community, full of ideas, energy and innovation. Under their Smart City Program, they have projects which include smart parking and transport, smart lighting and energy management, autonomous lawn mowing and automation and so on. The Fairfield City Council on the other hand has installed smart water meter systems which detect leaks instantaneously, thereby enabling savings of up to AU $4500 a month.

Adds Jaideep "Australian Smart City initiatives have a similar set of objectives like sustainable growth, improved experience, operational efficiency and better use of data. In the grand scheme of things, a smart city initiative is never just about the technology. It is about excellence in vision and execution. And most importantly, the impact the initiative has had. We look forward to seeing who will win this year. This smart city award is an eloquent testimony to the exceptional problem-solving abilities these councils have demonstrated time and again. It is a recognition of their efforts towards achieving sustainable economic and environmental development."

About the Smart City Asia Pacific Awards

The Smart City Asia Pacific Awards (SCAPA) were created to identify, benchmark and publicly vote on the best projects each year across 12 functional smart city strategic domains. It is an intensive six-month process that tracks and evaluates hundreds of smart city initiatives in the Asia Pacific region.

The award categories are: Administration; Civic Engagement; Digital Equity and Accessibility; Education; Public Health and Social Services; Public Safety; Smart Buildings; Smart Water; Sustainable Infrastructure; Transportation; Tourism, Arts, Libraries, Culture and Open Spaces; and Urban Planning and Land Use.

All finalists compete via IDC benchmarking, public voting, and judging from an International Advisory Council. In 2018, 50% of the weighting will come from IDC benchmarking, public votes will account for 25%, with the remaining 25% based on the assessment of an International Advisory Council. IDC will announce one winner in each smart city strategic domain.

Make your vote count and stand a chance to win an Amazon Echo Plus through an electronic raffle draw. For more information on the methodology for the Smart City Asia Pacific Awards, please contact Jefferson King at jking@idc.com or visit the Smart City Website for updates.
