The COVID-19 outbreak has been a defining event of our times, and the abrupt and wide-ranging disruptions caused by the pandemic have forced enterprises to aggressively adopt technologies that improve their agility, responsiveness, and resilience in the face of significant environmental challenges (or even opportunities). IDC's findings reveal that interest in all manner of business process and IT Operations automation has increased significantly since the pandemic, with enterprises looking at automation as a crucial means to ensure resilience and business continuity in the face of unprecedented disruption. In fact, "greater investment in automation" was cited by respondents as among the most significant changes to their enterprise IT strategy, underscoring the importance of intelligent automation capabilities and associated services in the Next Normal.

“Enterprises urgently need the support of IA services vendors that can help them define a path to rapid and scalable adoption of intelligent automation, unify disparate silos of automation into a unified enterprise-wide framework that spans data, intelligence, and automation; and assist with the necessary change management to ensure that the automation initiatives are fully embraced and championed by the enterprise workforce," adds Sandeep Sharma, Research Manager for Software and IT Services Research at IDC Asia/Pacific.

IDC defines Intelligent Automation as a collection of transformational business and operational capabilities realized by the combination of Data Analytics, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML), and diverse automation technologies. Intelligent Automation Services encompass the entire spectrum of business and IT Services – Business and IT Consulting, Systems Integration, Custom Application Development, Managed Application and Infra Services, Support Services, and Training and Education – that help deliver the power of intelligent automation to enterprises.
