Australian 5G Smartphone Share Soars to More Than Half of the Market

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, June 2, 2021 – Shipments for 5G-enabled smartphones into Australia have increased substantially on a market share basis over the past year, from close to 14% share in 2020Q1 to over 55% share in 2021Q1 according to the latest figures by International Data Corporation (IDC). The global technology research and consulting firm's newly released Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker shows 5G smartphone shipments to the country rose significantly in 2020Q4 and 2021Q1 in particular.

John Riga, Associate Market Analyst at IDC Australia, believes this growth is primarily driven by 5G device availability; “the release of the iPhone 12 series in 2020Q4, and the Samsung Galaxy S21 series in 2021Q1 - both exclusively as 5G-ready devices, undoubtedly drove this growth in share” says Riga. “Additionally, the increased range of 5G devices in recent quarters, including more low-cost options from a variety of Android brands, has broadened the number of consumers willing to pick up a 5G device.” Over the past year, the number of 5G-ready devices offered in Australia has grown from nine models in 2020Q1 to 36 models in 2021Q1, demonstrating the much wider range consumers are now presented with. “However, it should be noted that these devices may not necessarily be connected to a 5G service yet, as rollout of Australia’s 5G mobile network coverage continues,” Riga adds.

Another major factor enabling the major growth in 5G-enabled smartphone share is a recovery in consumer confidence and the growth in the smartphone market as whole over the past two quarters. “We saw YoY growth in the smartphone market of 13.5% in 2021Q1 and 8.8% in 2020Q4; indicating a rebound from the declines seen in the earlier quarters of 2020,” says Riga.

IDC expects the trend of growth in 5G smartphone market share to continue in coming quarters, as 5G network coverage on all three major mobile network operators in Australia continues to expand, along with an increasing number of brands offering 5G devices. “We expect iOS to lead in 5G share in coming years, as some lower-priced 4G offerings will continue to be present on Android” adds Riga.

Note: 2021 and 2022 market shares are IDC forecast data
