FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, Almaty — International Data Corporation (IDC), in cooperation with the Institute of Petroleum Engineering and Information Technologies of KBTU, signed a contract with JSC Almaty Development Center for the joint development of the smart city concept "Smart Almaty".
The Almaty Development Center was established by Akimat (the municipal government) with the aim of using innovative technologies to provide residents with an enhanced quality of urban life. To this end, several projects were initiated, including the Smart Almaty project.
The project implementation requires a well-defined concept of a smart city development, drafted through the in-depth analysis of the current situation and the innovative capacity of the city, as well as a study of best international practices. To ensure effective execution of this project, it was decided to use proven methodologies and information databases provided by third-party consulting companies. After analyzing the proposals of companies under the auspices of a public tender, JSC Almaty Development Center selected the consulting agency IDC as a methodological advisor and executor of a number of the project objectives.
IDC has experience in the development of smart cities, including those for such major metropolises as Riyadh in Saudi Arabia and New York in the U.S. Furthermore, IDC’s experience is not limited to this type of undertaking: For over five years, IDC has been conducting its own Smart Cities Index Ranking and Smart Cities MaturityScape, a ranking of cities in different regions of the world using its own proven methodologies. Annually, IDC also publishes a wealth of regional and international research, undertakes custom research and consulting projects for major vendors, collaborates with leading universities around the world, and organizes international competitions and conferences on smart cities.
Work on the Almaty Smart project concept requires a study of the current state of information and communication technologies in Almaty, entailing an assessment of their maturity and further development to provide the harmonization of existing and future projects, including eGovernment. The project provides for the development of priority areas such as intelligent transportation systems, smart utilities, safe cities, and smart health and education.
According to the contract, the experience reviews of successful smart city projects in 20 cities in the world will be collated, in order to enable a comparative assessment of the current and planned city situation. This will assist JSC Almaty Development Center in implementing the best technological solutions based on the characteristics and priorities of Almaty. The integration of international experience and knowledge will maximize the effectiveness and relevance of the concept developed.
"We are pleased to contribute to the Smart City project for the largest city in Kazakhstan, through the application of our international expertise and proven methodology," says Andrew Beklemishev, IDC regional manager for Central Asia and Azerbaijan. "In the next three years, IDC expects one-third of medium-sized and large cities in the world will have established a road map for Smart City construction, based on a study of existing best practices. We hope to transform Almaty into a model for urban development for the entire region of Central Asia."
