Istanbul — Shipments of personal computing devices (PCD) in Turkey beat expectations and rose 6.2% year on year in Q3 2017, according to International Data Corporation (IDC).
IDC's Quarterly PCD Tracker shows that Q3 2017 shipments of desktops, notebooks, workstations, and tablets in Turkey were up 17.6% over Q2 2017.
PCD shipments in Turkey totaled 1,034,055 units in Q3 2017 — 9.7 % higher than projected.
Ayse Kaptanoglu, senior research analyst for IDC Turkey, described September as a PCD "recovery month" following the summer slowdown. Large company deals, strong consumer demand (including back-to-school sales), and the holding of previously delayed government tenders led to the better than expected results.
“Customers postponed spending in recent quarters due to exchange rate fluctuations and macroeconomic uncertainties," said Kaptanoglu. "To heat up the market, retailers offered discounted prices and extended payment terms. Telcos pushed promotions for gaming PCs, devices with data packages, and extended payment terms."
The analyst added that small and medium-sized businesses and large enterprises began to purchase more PCDs after Turkey's April 2017 constitutional referendum.
HP Inc., Lenovo, and Asus continued to hold the biggest unit shares of the Turkish PCD market year on year.
In tablets, Samsung led the market year on year, holding a 29.1% share in Q3 2017. Vestel slumped and was overtaken by TCL, which jumped to second with a 10.7% share. Thanks to retail and telco deals, Lenovo moved into third, with a 9.9% share.
