CEMA Industrial Printer Market Affected by Pandemic and Supply Shortages in 2020
PRAGUE, April 12, 2021 – According to the Worldwide Quarterly Industrial Printer Tracker published by International Data Corporation (IDC), the industrial printer market in Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East, and Africa (CEMA) contracted by 23.5% in units and by 28.3% in value year on year in 2020, recording shipments of 31,314 units with a total value of $247.01 million.
“During the first half of the year, purchasing activity in the market was affected by lockdowns in most countries. In the second half of the year, insufficient supply caused by breakdowns in manufacturers' factories had an additional negative effect on the market (mostly for aqueous large-format printers)," says Oleksiy Gvozdenko, program manager for Imaging Print Document Solutions research at IDC CEMA. "Shipments approached pre-crisis levels only in the fourth quarter, when the year-on-year unit decline was only 3.6%."
Product Category Highlights:
The large format printer (LFP) market declined by 23.6% in units and 30.2% in value terms, owing to the impact of lockdowns and tight supply. Also, demand in key Middle East countries (and, to some extent, in Russia) suffered from large-scale oil price declines in the first half of the year.
The direct to shape (DTS) printer market contracted by 29.8% in units and 29.5% in value, largely due to weaker demand for souvenir products during the pandemic.
Direct to garment (DTG) printer shipments recorded a 17.5% year-on-year decline in units and 24.5% in value. DTG printers continue to be widely used in custom mask printing. The unit share of entry-level DTG printers grew from 20.4% in 2019 to 26.1% in 2020, mainly driven by the extended product availability in this segment.
The industrial textile printer market declined by 24.5% in units and by 40.4% in value. Similar to the DTG market, unit share growth was recorded in the entry-level segment, which rose from 79.8% in 2019 to 91.1% in 2020.
The label & packaging printer market grew by 8.3% year on year in units but declined by 1.0% in value. This market performed well compared to other product categories due to strong demand for labeling and packaging solutions created by the pandemic conditions.
In 2020, Canon Group claimed the leading position on the CEMA industrial printer market in terms of units. Other brands making up the Top 5 in unit terms were HP, Epson, Mimaki, and Roland.
