IDC Innovators for the 2016 Smart City Open Data Platforms Market

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., May 17, 2016 – International Data Corporation (IDC) has published its 2016 IDC Innovators report recognizing pioneering players in the smart city open data platforms market. IDC Innovators are companies with under $50 million in revenue that offer an inventive technology and/or groundbreaking new business model.

Junar, NuCivic (a GovDelivery company), OpenDataSoft, and Socrata were all named as IDC Innovators in the smart city open data platforms market for 2016.

"Starting with the beginning of the Smart Cities movement in the mid-2000's, there has been pressure for governments, and in particular local governments, to be more transparent, and therefore more accountable. Thus arose the Open Data movement, a key aspect of the government digital transformation that is unfolding in Smart Cities," said Ruthbea Yesner Clarke, Research Director, Smart Cities Strategies.

Junar was chosen as an IDC Innovator for municipalities because it provides a simple entry level for small and medium cities, not just large cities or agencies, to provide data sets to the public. NuCivic offers a truly open source data publishing platform, based on Drupal. Its solution is also a turnkey, fully hosted cloud open data offering. OpenDataSoft offers a turnkey software as a service (SaaS) open data publishing solution that can be deployed on any public or private cloud, with deeply granular levels of rights/access control. Socrata is a pioneer in the open data market and a well-known name. It has developed an open data enterprise software platform and has the associated thought leadership, formal practices, and training materials to support a digital government journey.

IDC Innovators: Smart City Open Data Platforms 2016 (Doc #US41154416) profiles select companies in the smart city open data platforms market with an innovative technology or a groundbreaking new business model or both. The IDC Innovators research document examines companies with revenues of less than $50 million with a product, service or business model with a specific use case.
