IDC Government Insights and FedScoop Reveal 2016 Rankings of Top 100 Vendors and Top 25 Enterprises Selling IT to Federal Government

Lockheed Martin, Leidos, and Northrop Grumman lead inaugural Federal IT Top 100 Rankings Hewlett-Packard, IBM, and Boeing top Enterprise 25

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., June 28, 2016IDC Government Insights, working in conjunction with F ed S coop, revealed the winners of the 2016 IDC Government Insights Federal IT Rankings today. The new industry award program categorizes and evaluates the revenues of leading global technology and service providers based on calendar year revenues from government institutions for hardware, software, and/or services. To download the list in its entirety, please visit the Federal IT Rankings microsite and read FedScoop’s story on the findings.

Two categories of companies are ranked:

1. Federal IT Rankings: Top 100 – This list includes vendors that derive more than one-third of their revenue from government institutions. Lockheed Martin, Leidos, and Northrop Grumman top the 2016 list.

2. Federal IT Rankings: Enterprise 25 – This list is comprised of enterprise companies serving multiple industries that derive less than one-third of their revenues from government institutions. Hewlett-Packard, IBM, and Boeing rank high on the 2016 list.

These inaugural lists, the first of their kind, rank the leading IT providers to federal government based on revenues from the sale of information technology hardware, software, and services rather than on potential business traditionally reflected in multiyear contract awards. While other industry lists include non-IT spending that may end up in IT contracts such as management, consulting and energy costs, they don't necessarily represent pure information technology products and services. The IDC Federal IT Rankings eliminate this information and only present revenue numbers based on the federal government's IT spending for Fiscal Year 2015. In addition, the IDC Government Insights' industry expertise sets the Federal IT Top 100 Rankings apart from traditional industry lists to offer government IT vendors keen insight into the government IT ecosystem, including who controls the market and how much money is being spent.

"What was surprising about the rankings is the level of IT spending that is controlled by the top players on these lists," said Shawn P. McCarthy, research director for IDC Government Insights. "Well over 50% of U.S. federal IT spending goes to the top 10 vendors on the lists."

"These rankings put federal government IT spending in a new light by providing details on how the federal government’s $80 billion IT budget was allocated in fiscal year 2015," said Wyatt Kash, vice president of content strategy for Scoop News Group, the parent of FedScoop.

For more than 50 years, IDC has collected and analyzed IT industry data to provide insight and guidance. Beginning this year, IDC Government Insights is systematically collecting global government IT revenue information and tracking the growth of the largest industry IT vendors in an effort to help both end users and IT suppliers alike to make the most strategic decisions for their institutions. The data is analyzed by IDC Government Insights analysts who use their understanding of global trends and industry activities to create meaningful rankings. IDC analysts also put the information in the context of industry trends for the benefit of both the institutions that buy technology, as well as the companies that provide IT solutions to the industry.
