New IDC MarketScape Evaluates Retail Warehouse Management Systems for Retail Brands

Increased distribution complexities necessitate next iteration of WMS for retail

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., April 4, 2017 IDC Retail Insights today announced the availability of a new IDC MarketScape report to provide end users with an updated look at the retail warehouse management systems (WMS) market. The new study, IDC Marketscape: Worldwide Retail Warehouse Management Systems 2017 Vendor Assessment (Document #US40330016), examines the warehouse management solutions vendors that are enabling retailers to innovate the way in which they store, distribute, and meet expectations to stay competitive in an omni-channel world. Nine WMS solutions are evaluated in this report, including capabilities from: HighJump, Infor, JDA, LogFire, Manhattan, NCR, Netsuite, Oracle, and SAP.

According to Victoria Brown, senior research analyst, IDC Retail Insights, "Vendors invited to participate have demonstrated that they have a significant retail brand market presence, continued growth in the retail space, and a wealth of experiences and best practices to share with retail brands."

The new IDC Marketscape highlights featured vendors’ current strengths and skills, and includes commentary from dozens of retailers offering insight into the selection, implementation, and use of WMS to help those just starting the process.

Based on this research, IDC provides a number of key recommendations, including:

  • Know your supply chain complexity before deciding on a solution. Some tools will have best practices already in the system. Some vendors will work with you hand in hand to build in your practices, while others will simply provide you with a tool to move your goods and not necessarily focus on efficiencies. If you understand your processes and warehouse complexities beforehand and understand the wants of the business, selection may be greatly simplified.
  • Identify internal champions of the system who have past experience with that vendor or solution. If you have internal expertise, it will greatly reduce reliance on support from the vendor which could incur extra service expenses.
  • Recognize the value in a portfolio beyond just a WMS. While you may set out for "just" a WMS, when several complimentary systems are available in the portfolio such as Labor Management, Slotting, Allocation, Dock Door Management, and Yard Management, speed to efficiencies will multiply and your return on investment will be expedited.

IDC MarketScape criteria selection, weightings, and vendor scores represent well-researched IDC judgment about the market and specific vendors. Market weightings are based on user interviews, buyer surveys and the input of a review board of IDC experts in each market. IDC analysts base individual vendor scores, and ultimately vendor positions within the IDC MarketScape, on detailed surveys and interviews with the vendors, publicly available information and end-user experiences in an effort to provide an accurate and consistent assessment of each vendor's characteristics, behavior and capability.
