Cloud and Datacenter Roadshow 2018

Next-Gen Datacenters: Making Cloud a Reality

Nairobi, September 20, 2018

While organizations in the ICT industry are adopting digital transformation to drive future growth and innovation, datacenters and the cloud are the underlying engines that will deliver legacy services and future digital services. Accordingly, datacenters and cloud platforms need to evolve and transform to keep pace with the demands of the new Digital Era.

As businesses move toward a 'Cloud-First' world, new technologies and service offerings are growing alongside new business models that meet digital transformation aspirations and imperatives. Fed by both national transformation initiatives and competitive market forces, the dynamic technology-enabled markets are also changing.

Adoption of best-in-class cloud models, as well as prevailing service-level agreements, security concerns, and financial optimization initiatives, will become ever more critical for the sustained success and performance of ICT environments — and business operations as well. Ultimately, cloud and datacenter strategies will be driven by business considerations as much as by technology and supplier choices.

Join IDC and key industry players at this conference to discuss the future of ICT in which cloud, mobility, and software-defined datacenters will allow enterprises to use IT as a business differentiator rather than a business enabler. At this event, you will gain strategic insights and tactical advantages that will make your cloud and datacenter choices even more effective going forward.

Data Centers and Cloud: Engines of Digital Transformation

Francis Hook
Consulting Manager, Telecoms & Networking, Africa

Data Centers have been a mainstay of IT for decades and their role and function has evolved with Cloud. IDC looks at the trends, challenges, and market conditions impacting the ICT landscape and how Data Centers and Cloud help address them and what considerations enterprises need to take when adopting a Service Provider.

Line of Business Involvement in Datacenters and Cloud

The LOBs have increasing influence on the IT decisions with shadow IT becoming a reality among the regions enterprises. While the LOB have a direct influence on cloud usage, they may or may not be as involved in the datacenter transformation. This presentation assesses the influence the LOBs today have within datacenters and how much the influence cloud adoption.

Importance for Security within the Overall Datacenter Strategy

With the rapid advent of digital technologies, organizations are becoming more and more vulnerable to threats. Hence security is playing an important role within the datacenter strategy planning cycle without which the digital transformation vision cannot be safely realized. This presentation highlights some of the security best practices within the modern datacenter

Cloud Enabling Technologies

Cloud ready infrastructures are different from traditional IT infrastructures from both hardware, software and management perspectives. Datacenters need to be consolidated, virtualized, software-centric and cloud enabled in order to be truly future ready. This presentation will cover the transformation of the datacenter into a cloud enabling function.

Software- Defined Everything

The adoption of server virtualization technology in the region is continuing to accelerate as organizations consolidate critical applications on virtual machines. These deployments will see organizations exploit other benefits of server virtualization, such as high availability, increased flexibility and scalability, and simplified disaster recovery. The adoption of ‘virtualization' today is broadening to storage, network and desktop virtualization. This will be the main driver for the Software-Defined “Everything” market being the next logical step to efficient control and centralized management in a fully virtualized environment.

Shift in Compute Architecture

The rate of business change within organizations has accelerated and necessitated a more rapid transformation of the datacenter. Server, storage, and networking vendors have created a set of offerings that resonate very well with datacenter operators looking for the next level of infrastructure efficiency within their highly virtualized environments. IDC expects the benefits that converged systems and organizations are slowly shifting to more converged and consolidated systems for their compute architecture.

The Flashy future of datacenter storage

Solid-State Drives (SSD’s), that are essentially an oversized and sophisticated version of the USB memory stick, are slowly making their way from the consumer to enterprise storage environments. The enterprise space has been traditionally dominated by tape and disk drives with the latter still accounting for almost 99% share of the enterprise external storage market. However, the past 2 years have seen SSD’s gain prominence among enterprises with a variety of options in terms of flash storage adoption. This presentation introduces the growing prominence of flash within enterprise storage systems.
