Utilities Smart Customer Operations Quarterly Update: January-March 2023
May-23 DOC # US49143123 Insight
This IDC Market Perspective analyzes worldwide smart customer operations in the energy sector. It outlines M&As, agreements, reorganizations, and major business developments; customer care and billing events; smart metering, conservation and energy-efficiency initiatives, and sustainability projects; digital transformation; and emobility developments in 1Q23.
“Unpredictability has become the name of the game among utilities. The events of the past two years have been game chargers. While more immediate matters such as supply security, demand efficiency, and tariff impacts on energy consumers are drawing attention from long-term initiatives, contingent factors such as extreme drought and catastrophic weather events are vivid reminders that climate is a non-linear process that must be addressed with extreme urgency. Utilities will continue to prioritize their net-zero journeys and sustainability efforts, with affordability being of paramount importance,” said Gaia Gallotti, associate research director, IDC Energy Insights.

Utilities Economic and Tech Spending Outlook and IT Budget Expectations for 2023
Apr-23 DOC # US46520121 Presentation
This IDC Survey looks at the array of challenges that IT leaders face in 2023 as they develop IT budgeting plans that anticipate potential economic disruptions while still maintaining the shift to digital business models. In January 2023, IDC connected with IT leaders around the world to gain an early insight into how they are navigating disruptions and prioritizing technology investments.
IDC's Global Technology Thought Leadership group conducts a monthly survey (IDC's Future Enterprise Resiliency & Spending Survey or FERS) to understand how IT and business leaders in enterprises around the world are assessing risks and addressing cost management for their growing portfolios of technology resources. In this wave, IDC also asked IT decision makers to indicate how concerns about inflation, recession, skills shortages, and other developments affected 2023 budget decisions across all major IT sectors, including digital infrastructure, platform as a service (PaaS), application/dev software/software as a service (SaaS), devices, networking, services, and security.
This survey of 1,032 respondents from North America, Latin America, Asia/Pacific, and Western Europe was conducted in January 2023 while IT and business leaders were finalizing technology budget plans for 2023. They reflect the attitudes and expectations as of that moment in time.

IDC Survey: Future of Industry Ecosystems — Utilities Industry
Feb-23 DOC # US50123523 Presentation
This IDC Survey presents data for the utilities industry from IDC's Future of Industry Ecosystem Survey. In May and June 2022, we fielded our second annual global survey to 1,270 executives across 5 regions and 11 countries. The goal was to determine executive and business leader sentiment on industry ecosystems, maturity of current approach, and future plans for IT and use case investment. Respondents spanned multiple domains and included CXOs, business-line leadership, and IT management.
Key findings from the survey include:
- Mitigating demand fluctuations and supply chain constraint and pursuing environmental sustainability goals are key joint initiatives for industry ecosystem partners.
- Trust and execution across industry ecosystems are the top risks to mitigate.
- Most organizations plan to, as they did last year, expand their industry ecosystems beyond their core industries.
- Service providers will play a key role in the design and enablement of industry ecosystems.
Another key area of focus for organizations when they consider the design and operation of their industry ecosystem is improvement of customer, consumer, citizen, or patient engagement and experience. That is, how does the shared, open approach of industry ecosystems (shared data and insights, shared applications, shared operations and expertise) better facilitate this?
This IDC Survey on the future of industry ecosystems is focused on the utilities sector cut of this survey data. This industry is faced with a trilogy of challenges, which increasingly require organizations to expand their set of ecosystem partners within and external to their core industry:
- Enabling distributed energy resource management (DERM) for residential, commercial, and city locations
- The electrification many industries are undergoing, such as the automotive industry with electric vehicles (EVs)
- Energy transition to renewable, sustainable sources of power generation
Joint ventures are becoming more common in the utilities industry, and there is a recognition that digital investments must be made that enable easier collaboration, sharing of data and applications, and consistent engagement with the end customer. IDC's Future of Industry Ecosystem Survey provides a view into how these organizations are currently working and planning to work with their ecosystem partners.

European IT Spending Forecast, 2022–2026: Key Digital Trends Across European Industries
Jan-23 DOC # EUR147862122 Study
This IDC Market Forecast analyzes European IT spending between 2021 and 2026 as well as provides a market size, forecast, and key trends supporting technology investments by industry. This forecast is segmented by IDC's 20 standard vertical markets: banking, insurance, securities and investment services, discrete manufacturing, process manufacturing, retail, wholesale, professional services, personal and consumer services, healthcare provider, transportation, telecommunications, media, utilities, construction, resource industries, federal/central government, state/local government, education, and consumer.
"In 2022, Europe had to adapt to new challenges and unexpected change that required a new level of resilience. Just as European companies were healing from damage from the COVID-19 pandemic, they were called to face the effects of the Russia-Ukraine War, which reverberated across the European market, impacting both enterprises and consumers. Energy, oil, and gas price increases, high inflation, staff shortages, lack of skills, supply chain disruptions, and logistics challenges ensued this year," said Andrea Minonne, research manager, Data and Analytics at IDC UK. "With the cost of products and services going up, customers will become more price sensitive and raise their customer experience (CX) expectations, and all industries will have to meet those expectations. On the other hand, the increase of fixed and variable costs such as rent and lease, bills, salaries, loan repayments, and raw material supply will put pressure on revenues and profits and European businesses will be more strategic in their investment choices. Lastly, with staff shortages affecting many industries, businesses are forced to adjust and automate their operations to guarantee processes and operations will stay healthy and guarantee business continuity."
