Abstract

This IDC Perspective lays out advice and success factors to help organizations drive successful digital-enabled business transformation, based on recent IDC field research.

Digital-enabled business transformation is happening, and organizations are getting results. But a large number of organizations feel that they could be doing better. This IDC Perspective presents advice and best practices aimed at helping organizations get the most from their digital-enabled transformation. This includes focusing strongly on people change and not just technology and process change; driving autonomy and empowerment across the organization; budgeting for change management; planning for the acquisition and management of entirely new skills; and treating the building and piloting of new technologies and work practices different from scaling them.

"Digital technologies have the power to grow revenue, make organizations more efficient, and also make people's lives better and richer as employees and as customers and consumers," says Douglas Hayward, research director for Digital Strategy Consulting at IDC. "But most organizations could be doing better at implementing digital technologies. The good news is that best practices and success factors are known, and in fact, we describe the major ones in this document. It's up to organizations themselves to decide if they will implement them."
