Abstract

This IDC Perspective provides feedback from Fortune 2000 organizations on the key lessons learned through transforming their application delivery models to DevOps. Throughout 2018, IDC conducted nearly three dozen in-depth telephone interviews with different enterprises and government entities across the world. Through the interviews, IDC sought to gain insight into how the organizations approached DevOps transformation and what the key lessons learned were through their transformations. The interviews spanned 10 industries including retail, wholesale trade, insurance, banking, healthcare, consumer products, government, high tech, aerospace, and telecommunications and also cut across 11 countries including the United States, Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Denmark, Australia, India, and New Zealand.

"DevOps adoption has surged in the enterprise, and organizations continue to apply DevOps to a broader portion of their application portfolio," says Pete Marston, research director, IDC's Application Life Cycle and Cloud Services. "While organizations are building stronger competencies, DevOps mastery remains elusive. As a result, organizations work hard to refine capabilities through applying lessons learned to their DevOps practices to improve teamwork, collaboration, and maturity as well as drive more operational efficiency and effectiveness."
