Abstract

This IDC Perspective, written for CIOs and senior IT leaders, discusses IT partner networks. Instead of the traditional approach of stitching together separate and often siloed digital projects to fulfill a digital initiative, an IT partner network enables CIOs and LOB executives to assemble a network of digital partners that continuously works toward the overall goal of the initiative. Each partner contributes unique talent, customer and technology knowledge, digital capabilities, and other assets and obtains some benefit or value in return. The vision and goals of the initiative, along with architectures, policies, and other artifacts, and governance collectively guide partners' actions and deliverables to ensure consistency and interoperability while encouraging innovation and flexibility.

"The traditional model of IT as a primary supplier and procurer of IT services supporting IT-sanctioned LOB technology initiatives is buckling under the pressure of digitally driven change," says Marc Strohlein, adjunct research advisor with IDC's Research Network. "CIOs need to find ways to expand the reach and impact of the IT organization through new ways of organizing and by moving beyond partner management to partner orchestration using IT partner networks."
