Abstract

This IDC study — a collaboration of IDC's infrastructure and datacenter teams — provides an assessment of the next-generation infrastructure components that enterprises need to use as the foundation for future-proofed edge-centric digital transformation (DX) initiatives. This IDC TechScape is an evaluation based on a comprehensive framework and a set of parameters that assess vendors relative to one another and to those factors expected to be most conducive to success enabling edge IT service delivery during the short term and the long term. This IDC TechScape can be used together with Best Practices for Planning an Edge Computing Infrastructure (IDC #US43615818, March 2018) to generate a more holistic IT at the edge technology and operations strategy.

"The optimal digital space of the future, be it a store, a hospital, an airport, a campus, or any other place that we work, play, or live requires a next-generation edge IT infrastructure. The deployment and ongoing maintenance of all edge IT assets must be centrally controlled and automated, so organizations can manage fleets of tens, hundreds, or even thousands of IT assets in locations around the country or the globe," said Richard Villars, vice president, Datacenter and Cloud, IDC.
