Abstract

This IDC Perspective analyzes the recommendations in an internal memo from Elon Musk to the employees of Tesla, discusses Musk's "first principles thinking" framework, and provides recommendations to CIOs on how to benefit from Musk's advice. Musk has built a substantial business empire fueled by his passions, business savvy, and leadership philosophy. What's more, even though Musk is not a millennial, he is hugely popular with them. Studying Musk's leadership approach can help CIOs learn how they, too, can more effectively engage their workforce. This document offers several of Musk's key "productivity recommendations" that are germane to CIOs engaged in IT transformation or otherwise trying to wring more performance out of their organizations.

"At first glance, Elon Musk's views on meetings, internal communication, and process and company rules may seem extreme, but in today's continually accelerating business environment, survival of the fastest, not the fittest, marks those who will thrive," says Eric Bloom, adjunct research advisor, IDC's Research Network.
