Abstract

This IDC TechBrief provides business leaders and IT with an executive snapshot of robotic process automation software, its impact on process improvement, and the value it brings to an enterprise through successful adoption. In the definition of RPA, IDC also includes software platforms that use the term "intelligent automation."

"RPA software is an emerging technology that automates tasks performed by humans by mimicking and playing back how workers perform the repetitive portions of their job. Until recently, task automation was an unacknowledged deficiency in the broader portfolio of automation technologies," according to Maureen Fleming, program vice president for Intelligent Process Automation research at IDC. "Enterprises realize the importance of this class of software and market adoption is growing rapidly."
