Abstract

This IDC Perspective offers a framework for systematic IT innovation in the enterprise. CIOs need to invest time and resources to create tools, starting with an innovation model framework that defines key parameters in innovation efforts, providing structure and consistency in approach. This document provides a working definition for IT innovation, introduces a model framework for identifying and understanding types of innovation, explains why the framework is needed, and provides guidance to CIOs in its application.

"Innovation is simply too critical to be left to happenstance and serendipity," says Marc Strohlein, adjunct research advisor with IDC's IT Executive Programs (IEP). "CIOs need to take charge of IT and enterprise digital innovation — using systematic processes and approaches that yield continual streams of high-impact innovations."
