Abstract

This IDC Perspective describes an approach for dealing with cybersecurity issues and provides recommendations for a communications plan that best serves the needs of the enterprise. Over the past decade, cybersecurity has been given increasing attention by business executives, such that these days it is not uncommon for cybersecurity to be a top concern for many executives. In a similar time period, media outlets have also significantly increased their coverage of various cybersecurity-related issues and events. Sometimes, this reporting serves to highlight important information that should be factored into the work plan for cybersecurity programs, but just as often, it serves to highlight minor problems that do not require any attention. Whether overblown or not, the reporting gets the attention of executives who require a response.

"Fear, uncertainty, and doubt are an occupational hazard in cybersecurity," said Pete Lindstrom, VP of Security Strategies at IDC. "Knowing how to assess new pieces of information and determine its impact on a cybersecurity program is crucial in communicating with business executives who need to understand the impact on the business."
