Abstract

This IDC Perspective provides a simple, business-level discussion of the "FC versus Ethernet" storage networking choice for performance- and/or availability-sensitive, block-based workloads. It reviews the key considerations that should be taken into account as enterprises look at using Ethernet for these types of storage workloads. It also discusses how preexisting FC network infrastructure and planned transitions to NVMe technologies may impact long-term strategic decisions on this topic.

"Both Ethernet and FC-based storage networks have their place in today's enterprises," said Eric Burgener, research vice president, Infrastructure Systems, Platforms, and Technology Group at IDC. "In making deployment decisions, it's important to understand the advantages and disadvantages of each approach to ensure business objectives for the relevant workloads are met."
