Abstract

This IDC Perspective elaborates CIOs' guide to the future of digital innovation. This document is a guide to the future of digital innovation designed to help CIOs understand what roles they must play and what new challenges they face, as well as key steps they must take in preparing to help drive future of innovation efforts for their businesses. Digital innovation, in effect, is software innovation and that has profound implications for CIOs and IT organizations. As large enterprises become software producers, they need to develop enterprise scale competencies in four key areas, identified by IDC as planning, development, sourcing, and distribution. Collectively, these comprise a methodology that IDC refers to as the "digital innovation supply chain."

"CIOs need to realize that IT can no longer just be a supplier of technology that runs the business," says Marc Strohlein, adjunct research advisor with IDC's Research Network. "IT has to become part of the product development and delivery fabric that is the business."
