Abstract

This IDC study provides a path for CIOs to automate the analysis of project, technology, application, service, process, and other portfolios to refocus on priorities in a post-COVID-19 environment, as well as to identify redundancies, gaps, overlaps, poor performing items, costs, and life-cycle concerns. It describes portfolio optimization as a real-time capability with embedded intelligence that allows situation analysis, prediction, recommendations, automation, and performance monitoring. An immediate need for fact-based, agile, and flexible refocusing and reprioritizing IT assets and activities should be among the highest priorities of the CIO. This study creates a step-by-step plan for addressing this priority.

"With today's uncertainty, CIOs need to adjust their project, technology, application, and service portfolios to refocus on new realities and priorities," according to Mike Rosen, adjunct research advisor in IDC's IT Executive Programs. "Architecturally driven portfolio optimization allows for fact-based decisions that balance immediate concerns with future requirements."
