Abstract

This IDC Perspective discusses the question of when a multimodel DBMS is the right choice, and when a fit-for-purpose DBMS is preferred. It includes analysis of the requirements for each, now and in the future, as well as current trends in the industry.

"Most enterprises are confronted with transformative IT developments along a number of dimensions, including the rise of highly specialized data for specific workloads, the need to rapidly ingest and leverage streaming data, and the infusion of artificial intelligence, requiring machine learning, into many, if not most data-driven applications," says Carl Olofson, research vice president for Data Management Software research at IDC. "Add to these the inexorable move to the cloud, and you have a perfect storm of sometimes conflicting demands regarding data types and usage, latency and consistency, and development flexibility versus stability for analytic purposes."
