Abstract

This IDC Perspective discussed the future of scale-out NAS.

Scale-out file-based storage (NAS) continues to gain traction with organizations especially focused on a software-defined datacenter strategy and public cloud adoption to modernize their IT. Scale-out all-flash FBS arrays will support greater number of applications and workloads in the coming years. For end users, scalability, performance, flexibility of deployment, data management tools, hybrid cloud strategy, cost optimization, and so on will be key considerations when selecting scale-out FBS solution.

"Unstructured data forms a majority of the overall data created and stored. File- and object-based storage solutions continue to serve as essential infrastructure components that support unstructured data throughout its life cycle," said Amita Potnis, research director, Infrastructure for Systems, Platforms, and Technologies Group, at IDC. "IDC expects all-flash scale-out NAS to continue to proliferate along with software-defined storage in the coming years with adoption of several OEM file storage offerings in the public cloud."
