Abstract

This IDC Perspective applies a SWOT analysis model to assess the efficacy of outsourcing among midmarket companies (small to medium-sized businesses [SMBs]). The SWOT model enables a company to assess strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to ensure that the ultimate benefits outweigh weaknesses, plan mitigation actions to blunt the weaknesses, and capture future opportunities while monitoring and avoiding the potential threats.

"Though the traditional global IT outsourcing market will shrink by 2.7% annually from 2020 to 2024, outsourcing services still have a role to play if companies use them well," says Ron Babin, adjunct analyst with IDC's IT Executive Program. "Outsourcing firms continue to offer five economic levers that enable firms to reduce costs or increase competitiveness."
