Abstract

This IDC Perspective looks at Kafka, how it is being used, and Confluent's efforts to simplify and improve the latest release of the company's platform, aimed at operating a global Kafka mesh.

Confluent announced the new release of its platform during the Kafka Summit 2020 in August. The new version will launch with the latest Apache Kafka 2.6, running as self-managed software across clouds. The new release is aimed at removing barriers to adoption by simplifying on-premises management of Kafka and providing seamless and reliable real-time data sync between Confluent running at the edge or datacenter and Confluent running across clouds.

"Apache Kafka is popular open source software supporting real-time collection and exchange of data across highly distributed systems. While Kafka is considered a challenging technology to adopt, the new release by Confluent promises to make Kafka simpler to adopt and manage, creating better alignment with mainstream enterprise adoption," according to Maureen Fleming, program vice president, Intelligent Process Automation research.
