Abstract

This IDC Tech Buyer Presentation details how the impacts of COVID-19 are ubiquitous. In fact, the term unprecedented is warranted. It seems that everything is different. This presentation describes 12 critical drivers — important external forces — of change in the global business ecosystem that will shape enterprise IT and business strategies for the next 12–24 months. And instead of having a specific COVID-19 driver, we have integrated COVID-19 impacts into all the drivers from a topical perspective. IDC uses the paradigm PESTEL+B — political, economic, social, technological, environmental, legal, and business — to describe the scope of forces included in our annual driver review. The 2021 drivers touch on innovation, data, geopolitical risk, platforms, trust, customer expectations, work transformation, and more.

"With the fallout of the global COVID-19 pandemic and the accelerating pace of other changes, business and technology leaders need to be prepared for the disruption and opportunities as they shape their business and technology plans," says Suya Xiong, research manager of IDC's IT Executive Program. "IDC's drivers provide a context for the most important forces of change that have the potential to dramatically alter the global business ecosystem for the next 12–24 months and beyond."
