Abstract

This IDC Perspective is a guide to the concept and application of adaptive planning in pursuit of IT organizational resilience. Adaptive planning has been developed and applied by ecologists and urban planners who focus on ecosystem and community resilience. This study is intended to help CIOs understand adaptive planning, how IT can use adaptive planning, and why it is necessary to achieve true resilience. This document also provides practical guidance on the steps needed to apply adaptive planning to achieve resilience, including creation of adversity teams and centers based on BizOps practices.

"Instead of trying to predict and prepare for an unknowable future, CIOs should focus on understanding the impacts from a wide range of events and forces and use adaptive planning to design and build core resilience capabilities to deal with those impacts," says Marc Strohlein, adjunct research advisor with IDC's IT Executive Programs (IEP).
