Abstract

This IDC Perspective looks at adopting DevOps approaches for quality execution and faster deployments. IDC sees organizations seeking to establish effective strategies for coordinated change and quality management as part of their DevOps software delivery pipeline increasingly. With the need to release software more quickly to adapt to dynamic business needs (and as part of digital transformation [DX]), companies must invest in agile approaches to change management in conjunction with continuous testing.

"How is it possible to manage hundreds or more changes per day while incorporating quality and meeting audit requirements? In many instances, teams want to deploy quickly but can't. With stricter compliance requirements, change requests must be supplied for all or most changes typically, along with approvals and related test artifacts to provide needed visibility for teams (and auditors)," said Melinda Ballou, research director, IDC's Agile ALM, Quality, and Portfolio Strategies Service. "Streamlining the software delivery pipeline is a key first step; it's hard to release quickly otherwise. Bottlenecks created by different kinds of manual processes impede software delivery. Adopting release orchestration with efficient agile, iterative processes helps provide needed visibility for change, quality, and release management and aids collaboration with stakeholders. This enables prioritization, relevance, and auditing and compliance."
