Abstract

This IDC PeerScape describes how four CIOs from very different organizations and industries had the foresight to prioritize cultural health as the foundation of their success. The cultures they created went well beyond the traditional boundaries of the IT function itself. They were expanded to embrace broader cultural domains in terms of IT's role and its relationship to the business and an even broader expansion of culture wherein contribution to the greater community good and societal advancements is engendering purpose to work beyond monetary profit alone. This study addresses the following best practices:

  • Envision and inculcate a high-performance IT culture.
  • Cultivate a climate of entrepreneurship in the relationship of IT and the business.
  • Connect work to purpose and the greater good beyond the immediate business enterprise.

"These organizations rebuilt the IT culture into a broader enterprise digital culture as the foundation of success," says Bob Multhaup, adjunct analyst, IDC's IT Executive Programs (IEP). "CIOs who had the foresight to invest in their culture prior to the pandemic have been rewarded with a strong defensive bulwark to absorb the initial blow of the crisis and have been further rewarded by their people and cultures, which have performed well during the recovery."
