Abstract

This IDC Perspective explores the applications-related complexities that enterprises face in their cloud adoption journey. Digital transformation and modernization of IT are strategic business objectives that are underpinned by a multicloud architecture. However, a cloud-based environment heralds novel challenges that must be addressed by unique tools, processes, and expertise.

For the cloud adoption to be successful, enterprises must embrace cloud-native frameworks, capitalize on cloud services, optimize TCO, enable interoperability, and ensure security and compliance.

"Digital transformation had already been widely adopted by enterprises to varying degrees before COVID-19. However, the global pandemic has catapulted this process forward by many years and has permanently altered many sectors of the economy. As enterprises reimagine their business models and embark on digitization of their products and services, cloud computing becomes the bedrock of this transformation. However, enterprise IT and other stakeholders must understand the complexities and challenges of cloud-based applications and must formulate holistic strategies and processes unique to the cloud," said Chris Kanthan, research manager in Cloud BuyerView group at IDC.
