Abstract

This IDC Market Perspective discusses a managed approach for a secure, software-defined future enterprise. Enterprises for a long time have used private connectivity (MPLS, Ethernet) for key applications and to connect to their datacenters and/or branch offices. However, acceleration toward hybrid architectures, public internet-based connectivity, and use of as-a-service or multicloud environments require a transformation in traditional WAN services used by enterprises, giving rise to the need to revisit the enterprise network infrastructure. With revenue from core services growing at an anemic pace for service providers, this increased enterprise appetite for network consulting and integration services provides them with new diversification strategies and can lead to new revenue and network monetization options.

Organizations have generally relied on private connectivity options such as MPLS and Ethernet to connect key applications, datacenters, and branch offices over the years. However, the shift toward hybrid architectures, greater use of public internet connectivity, and increased adoption of multicloud environments have resulted in a renewed need for businesses to reevaluate their network architectures. As revenue growth from core services slows for service providers, this increased demand for network consulting and integration services from enterprises presents new opportunities for diversification and potential revenue and network monetization options.

"With the growing need for applications and workloads to be spread across a broader IT footprint, the importance of having well-designed, properly implemented, and effectively managed connectivity solutions has become crucial for businesses. Companies are searching for partners to assist them in securely transitioning to virtual networks, giving service providers a chance to expand their revenue streams," Nikhil Batra, research director, IDC Asia/Pacific Telecom.
