Abstract

In this IDC Market Perspective, as 5G nonstandalone (NSA) and standalone (SA) deployments progress, standard bodies, such as the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) and international partners, are moving along at a brisk pace in identifying a string of incremental achievements and some revolutionary concepts, such as 5G non-terrestrial networks (NTN) and full duplex time-division duplex (TDD) communications. The industry, led by research and development (R&D) labs and top academic labs around the globe, is vigorously investigating the potential architecture, frequencies, and capacity for future 6G, which will also include sub-terahertz (THz) bands (100–300GHz or more), along with centimeter (3–30GHz) and millimeter wave (mmWave) (30–100 GHz). "As a result, IDC believes that as 5G Advanced is solidified and implemented or coded, there will be considerable innovations that will spring up from the coalescence of 5G Advanced and 6G concepts," says Bill Rojas, Adjunct Research Director, IDC Asia/Pacific.
