Abstract

This IDC Tech Buyer Presentation outlines and quantifies some of the major challenges faced by power grids and distribution system operators (DSOs) in Europe as the decarbonization, decentralization, and electrification of the power system gathers pace. These include issues with available capacity, resources, financing, planning, and permitting. This document also looks at the negative impact of growing demand and more variable distributed resources on grid efficiency and reliability.

The document highlights the current urgency for extracting capacity from existing infrastructure and investing in intelligent forecasting and a new data-driven approach to grid planning. It also presents relevant digital grid trends that speed up grid transformation. The presentation concludes by highlighting four of IDC's top 10 predictions for worldwide utilities for 2024 (IDC FutureScape: Worldwide Utilities 2024 Predictions, IDC #US50062023, October 2023) that focus on grids and network asset operators.
