Abstract

This IDC Perspective provides detailed results from IDC's annual State of Midmarket IT Survey. Our findings indicate that, despite the many other challenges faced because of the pandemic, many CIOs used the opportunity to accelerate the digitization of enterprise business. We found this acceleration manifested in the spending intentions of the IT leaders surveyed and in changing business priorities. Measured responses to the challenge are in addition shown in changes to work practices and the ways that CIO leaders prepare their organizations through equipping the enterprise workforce with the technology and skills necessary to preserve or gain in competitive advantage.

"The pandemic triggered a reliance on technology greater than we have seen before. Innovative organizations turned this vital dependence on technology into an opportunity to innovate and build on their foundation of digital business and pivoting into new business models and lines of business," notes Joe Pucciarelli, group vice president and executive advisor with IDC's IT Executive Programs (IEP). "This situation makes CIOs visible and instrumental in leading their organizations' technology, securing a visible and essential seat in the C-suite and attention and support in the boardroom."
