Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight highlights product manufacturers' current plans and priorities for GenAI, as it relates to the engineering and R&D process. Participants were asked to consider GenAI and to rank use cases from 1 (not at all important) to 5 (very important). This document reveals GenAI use cases that hold the most interest for product manufacturers over the next 12 months and offers suggestions for how technology vendors can address those initiatives.

Data for this document comes from a GenAI follow-on question sent to participants in IDC's 2023 Product and Service Innovation Survey. The original survey was launched early in 2023, prior to the explosion of interest in GenAI; therefore, this additional question now provides a fuller picture of technology that is impacting product and service innovation. The question defined GenAI as a branch of computer science (involving unsupervised and semi-supervised algorithms) that enables computers to generate new content/recommendations for users based on existing content, such as text, audio, video, images, and software code, and that is related to, but separate from, generative design, AI/ML, and Big Data and analytics.
