An IDC Innovator report is an IT Buyer research document featuring a set of vendors – under $100 million in revenue at time of selection – chosen by an IDC analyst within a specific market that offer an innovative new technology, a groundbreaking approach to an existing issue, and/or an interesting new business model.
It is not an exhaustive evaluation of all companies in a segment or a comparative ranking of the companies. The target audience of the IDC Innovators program are tech buyers, including but not limited to CIOs, IT decision makers, LOB, and investment institutions. Vendors in the process of being acquired by a larger company may be included in the report provided the acquisition is not finalized at the time of publication of the report. Vendors funded by venture capital firms may also be included in the report even if the venture capital firm has a financial stake in the vendor's company. The final list of companies featured in an IDC Innovator report undergoes a stringent approval process by the Innovator Review Panel composed of technology research leads across various regions.

IDC Innovator reports are published into relevant IDC subscription programs, which can then be accessed through the IDC reports library and analyst consultation by clients of IDC’s IT Executive Program (or IEP), IDC’s very own research and advisory subscription service for technology buyers, and clients of IDC’s Technology Investor Program, which provides independent, targeted and customized research to support the generation of investment ideas and facilitate effective investment decisions.
The IDC Innovator report provides technology buyers relevant information on a set of vendors’ innovative technology or new business model (and supporting specific use case) and the IT buyer problem or challenge that it will help alleviate or solve. With this information, technology buyers can then refer to IDC Innovator reports to make informed decisions about their vendor sourcing and management.
Through the IDC Innovator research, technology suppliers (including start-ups) now has a new platform where their innovative technology solution, or the new business model made possible by their solution, can be featured in many ways. This will help boost market awareness on the technology suppliers’ solutions, and with the opportunity to leverage on IDC’s validation of their ‘innovator’ status by an IDC analyst, creating new market opportunities for the technology supplier.
All technology suppliers featured in an IDC Innovator report becomes part of the IDC Innovator reports database, which technology buyers and technology investors subscribed to IDC’s research subscription programs can then access through the online library or analyst consultations when they are looking for insights on vendor-sourcing or latest technology solutions available in the market.
For featured technology suppliers looking to promote the “IDC Innovator” distinction given them, IDC also offers exclusive web rights for various press or promotional purposes. The chosen IDC innovators will receive a Certificate of Recognition from IDC China, and the opportunity to use the IDC Innovator program logo in their promotional materials.
