IDC and Puppet by Perforce Executive Dinner

Strengthen Software Delivery Agility Through Security and Compliance

In Association with

Join IDC and Puppet by Perforce C-Suite Executive Roundtable on October 12th from 6.30pm at the stunning Searcys at The Gherkin

Two thirds of UK organisations are not ready to ship software securely at scale. However, we live in a world where business agility is imperative, and key competitive battles are determined by how fast organisations can adapt, innovate, and ship digital products/services to market. While many organisations have evolved and reframed their software development, engineering and IT operations teams and capabilities around DevOps, two areas remain core bottlenecks: security and compliance. And there are good reasons for that - security and compliance provide no room for compromise. The risks of not taking this seriously range from financial penalties to loss of trust to removal of operating license.

Overview

As per IDC’s 2023 DevOps and Modern App Delivery survey, meeting regulatory compliance and ensuring the code is robust are among the biggest pain points organisations face in modern software delivery. Deep technical and organizational complexity in the IT landscape and IT operations makes enforcing security, and compliance very challenging.

While the volume of software dependencies and delivery processes in the average application environment is overwhelming. Today, 64% of organizations in the UK don’t have well-structured processes in place to govern their software delivery lifecycle and supply chain. This creates difficulties in both software delivery and audit reporting. Application development, platform engineering, security, and compliance teams struggle to keep up with the myriad of moving parts, and collaborate and coordinate with each other. Ensuring processes and updates along the software supply chain are vetted, approved, and recorded for auditing is another big challenge.

As more organisations realize the level of complexity in software delivery and the security and compliance exposure risks they are facing increase, confidence in software delivery capabilities is decreasing. As per IDC’s research, in 2023 only 11% of organizations in Europe are completely confident in their overall application security posture from 16% two years ago. Furthermore, for the average organization in Europe, less than a fifth of their application portfolio is being delivered using DevSecOps methodologies.

To advance software delivery agility, organisations will need to reconsider their current approach and strategy to defining and enforcing compliance and security policies, and drive a software-led approach to standardizing, automating and managing application delivery.
