Abstract

This IDC PeerScape examines three best practices for ensuring alignment between the organization's overarching strategy and its ongoing skills development strategy, for planning programs to increase the internal talent pipeline and futureproofing the skills of the workforce and for helping employees in the competency shift that face most job roles. It provides concrete examples from European organizations that have been through the learning curve in these areas.

"Workforce skills and the ongoing development of employees has finally been given a prominent place in many organizations' strategies. The discussion on how to fill the skills gap is everywhere, and rightly so. IDC research finds that lack of skills is hitting across most performance indicators," said Marianne Kolding, vice president, European Skills Practice. "There is a realization that upskilling and/or reskilling the current workforce is an attractive and necessary alternative to hiring from the market. This should not be a one-off, but rather an ongoing part of a company's skills strategy."
