Abstract
This IDC Perspective discusses the critical role of open, interoperable smart meter data exchange standards such as DLMS/COSEM in supporting the energy transition and enabling advanced grid-edge applications. With more than a quarter of the 1.1 billion smart electricity meters deployed globally compatible with DLMS/COSEM, the adoption of such standards is essential for ensuring seamless integration, security, and future-proofing of smart metering infrastructures, as confirmed by industry experts. This is particularly relevant as energy systems worldwide move toward decarbonization and electrification.
