Abstract

This IDC Market Perspective provides an overview of how technology can be used to instrument rivers. Many cities owe their existence to the proximity of a river, and maximizing this asset is an opportunity to add value through the use of rapidly maturing technology such as digital twins, AI, and edge for the built and natural environment. We have the chance to use all we have learned in developing the smart city arena to bring rivers into the people, place, and performance equation.

"Before cities had roads, their main arteries were rivers. Those arteries were polluted by industry and population growth. We now have the opportunity to use technology to bring the arteries back to life," said Joe Dignan, head, IDC Government Insights EMEA.
