Abstract
This IDC PlanScape discusses the constructive role that an emerging technologies team can play in software asset management (SAM). The emerging technologies team delivers capabilities that augment and enhance software asset management, turning it from an administration practice to a strategic one and ensuring SAM includes awareness and preparedness of planned product adoption with use cases and impact on the existing portfolio. The objective is to ensure SAM is involved with and manages the adoption of industry-leading technology at the optimum time to attain maximum business value.
"Companies are increasingly embracing emerging technology earlier in the product life cycle, looking to gain an advantage and deliver a business advantage," says David Williams, adjunct analyst, IDC's IT Executive Programs (IEP). "Software asset management must become a practice that ensures software portfolios are strategically planned, evaluated, and measured against business value and constantly evaluated to assess relevance. With the emerging technologies team, this objective can be realized."
