Dr. Arnal Dayaratna is Research Director, Software Development at IDC. Dr. Dayaratna focuses on software developer demographics, modalities of software development, trends in programming languages and other application development tools, and the intersection of these development environments and the many emerging technologies that are enabling and driving digital transformation. Dr. Dayaratna's research examines how the changing nature of software development relates to broader trends in the technology landscape.

Dr. Dayaratna brings ten years of strategy consulting experience to IDC with expertise directing software development, infrastructure, analytics and business intelligence initiatives for companies in the healthcare and pharmaceutical verticals. He has experience managing software development in startups and enterprises, with a specialization in building applications that deliver actionable business intelligence for operational decision-making. Dr. Dayaratna has led development projects related to the quantification of sales and market share data, risk management, predictive analytics and the creation of enterprise data warehouses and data lakes.

At IDC, Dr. Dayaratna's coverage includes developer experiences, developer demographics, the change nature of software development, documentation of requirements for SDLC, as well as the intersection of software development with cloud computing, big data, containers, serverless computing and PaaS environments, machine learning, predictive analytics, IoT and other emerging technologies.

Dr. Dayaratna received a Ph.D. in Literature from Duke University and a BA from Princeton University. He has also studied Advanced Japanese at the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies in Yokohama, Japan. He is a prolific blogger and experienced public speaker to a variety of audiences.
