Abstract

This IDC Perspective provides an assessment of the current state of generative AI (GenAI) technology in the cybersecurity market. Aware of the buzz surrounding generative AI, cybersecurity vendors have raced over the past year to integrate features into their software that leverage GenAI in a variety of ways. For cybersecurity solution buyers, the question has become, To what extent does GenAI actually enhance the effectiveness, usability, and value of cybersecurity tools? As they evaluate cybersecurity tools that include GenAI-based features, buyers must determine whether such features meaningfully enhance their ability to stay a step ahead of threat actors or amount merely to bells and whistles that don't significantly move the needle when it comes to detecting, interpreting, and remediating threats.

"Drawing on an analysis of nearly two dozen cybersecurity vendors that have introduced features or products based on GenAI technology within the past year, the document assesses the value that these enhancements create for security teams, IT organizations, and the businesses they support," says Michelle Abraham, research director in IDC's Security and Trust Group.
