Abstract

This IDC Perspective focuses on the growing skills gap being faced by operations and the actions/investments companies need to consider in response. Operational groups must keep up with the evolving requirements of jobs and get the most out of a limited workforce through continued automation, managing operational expertise, and incorporating AI/ML technology to transform the decision-making process.

"While talent is a top focus for every company today, operations need to have an added sense of urgency due to ongoing labor issues present for years. Operational demands have been changing frequently in recent years, which means the approach taken to the workforce must adapt as well. There is no magic solution to solve this issue; it will take a mix of approaches to effectively wade through the growing skills gap and align the workforce with future operations," said Reid Paquin, research VP, Future of Operations at IDC Industry Operations Insights.
