Abstract
This IDC Perspective explores the evolution of data systems into a form that requires no expertise on the part of users to explore thanks to generative AI. It details the work to be done on the user's end to make this a reality and offers concrete steps for getting there.
"We are accustomed to thinking about data in databases according to the models that drive their schemas and would like to imagine that all information can be made available in this way," says Carl Olofson, research vice president, Data Management Software research at IDC. "But nontechnical users aren't necessarily accustomed to thinking in terms of formalized tables or specialized terms representing the elements of the database. They just want to be able to ask a question in ordinary business terms and get an answer."
