Abstract
This IDC PlanScape discusses the implementation of digital capabilities to facilitate and speed IT/OT convergence. Digital transformation (DX), with its rapid evolution of OT, mandates new forms of governance for IT and new approaches to managing data to satisfy burgeoning demands for a disruptive competitive advantage and improved business outcomes of production and operations. For this business case of IT/OT convergence to succeed, IT and OT must jointly recognize two new digital capabilities — governance and data — beyond the traditional capabilities of people, processes, and technologies.
"True IT/OT convergence occurs when IT executives understand what's missing and available from IT to move enterprise technology forward to a transformative model and what IT must do to enhance/deliver OT-critical demands," states Bill Keyworth, adjunct advisor with IDC's IT Executive Programs (IEP). "In turn, line-of-business (LOB) operational executives must understand what's missing and available from OT to move enterprise technology forward to a digitally transformed model and what OT must do to enhance and deliver IT security and governance imperatives."
