Abstract

This IDC Market Perspective provides an overview of key developments in corporate sustainability and ESG in Europe. Regulatory requirements (especially CSRD reporting) remain the primary drivers for initiatives. However, a multitude of laws and ESG specifications creates challenges as organizations are struggling with ESG strategy and data management. Sustainability is on the verge of becoming a business opportunity for advanced companies, but there are still hurdles to overcome and new topics emerging, such as climate risk and nature tech.

"Demands from regulators and other stakeholders are pushing European companies to accelerate their ESG initiatives, but as macroeconomic conditions remain difficult, sustainability maturity is advancing only slowly. Technology vendors are also in demand, but they must mature their offerings and go-to-market approaches. It will be critical to showcase business value resulting from sustainability initiatives," said Katharina Grimme, associate vice president and research lead on sustainability, IDC Europe.
