Abstract

This IDC Survey examines selected results from IDC's Money and Shopping Survey fielded in 2Q23. Results and analysis focus on consumer engagement with ChatGPT approximately four months after the public launch of the generative AI (genAI) application. Areas of focus in this presentation include the share of global consumers that were aware of and used ChatGPT in the early months, general attitudes as expressed through descriptor words such as helpful and creepy, and characteristics of early users.

"Not surprisingly, Gen Z and millennial consumers were at the forefront of early engagement with ChatGPT," said Greg Ireland, research director for IDC's Future Consumer Agenda program. "Early impressions among consumers were positive as words such as helpful, useful, and productive were most commonly selected to describe ChatGPT."
