Abstract

This IDC Tech Buyer Presentation provides a decision tree framework that lays out path for evaluating the cost, timing, and skills factors across the full spectrum of consume/construct options. It provides deeper insights into the additional cost, power, and skills factors associated with deep construct options that call for investment in AI-optimized infrastructure. It also provides guidance on the new discipline (GenAI engineering), which enterprises must adopt to ensure consistent application of key principles to GenAI implementation projects, ensuring alignment with business outcomes, resources, and constraints.

GenAI is driving a significant portion of enterprises' new technology investments in 2024. This expansion is not a temporary event. The sustained use of models (large and small; public and private) and the integration of corporate data with those models in support of a growing range of functional and industry-specific use cases is a critical new workload that IT leaders need to prepare for now. One of the most important tasks will be to develop a scalable decision-making process for deciding when to consume prebuilt data and models (Buy) and when to construct (Build) grounded, fine-tuned, or custom models leveraging internal data. For most organizations, this is not a single either/or decision. It will be an ongoing series of when/where decisions as their use of GenAI scales.

This presentation was shared with clients in March 2024.
